Antony Price, Celebrated for Creating Looks for Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
The British designer Antony Price, the influential style architect behind many legendary styles favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, including the soft-colored suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "their hit Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
His passing follows shortly after he debuted his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Princess Diana.
A Pioneering Career
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he began designing men's fashion at Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show featured as its opener creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in shaping sculptural silhouettes cemented his status as a "true original," according to the UK's fashion authority.
During the nineties, he commenced designing pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including several ensembles for her US tour after assuming the title.
Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
