California's Governor States He Is Evaluating a White House Bid in 2028
Gavin Newsom, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he plans to determine whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 once the 2026 elections conclude.
"Yeah, it would be dishonest if I denied it," Newsom commented when asked about contemplating a campaign for president following the 2026 midterms. "I'd just be lying. And I won't do that."
The governor's current term as governor concludes in the start of 2027, and he cannot run again. Yet, he emphasized that any determination is a long way off.
"The future will decide," he added.
Growing Prominence as a Administration Opponent
Newsom has emerged as a prominent critic of the Trump administration, employing his digital presence and advocating for a proposition that would boost the party's representation in Congress in as a counter to Republican redistricting efforts. This move has invited attacks from adversaries.
Federal Funding Dispute
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom is indifferent about Californians in a Sunday appearance on Fox News. The secretary revealed intentions to withhold federal funds from California and threatened suspending the power to grant trucking licenses.
"I intend to cut a significant sum from California," Duffy declared, after a recent deadly accident in the state involving an unauthorized trucker that caused loss of life and four injuries.
His administration noted that the national authorities had reauthorized the individual's authorization on several occasions, which allowed him to obtain a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.
Duffy had previously indicated he was holding back $40 million from the state for not enforcing English language requirements for CDL holders.
Pointed Reply from the Governor's Office
"One-time television figure, now transportation chief, continues to misunderstand U.S. regulations," his administration responded in a previous statement addressing the funding warnings. "Meanwhile, as opposed to this individual, we rely on data: The state's truck drivers had a accident mortality rate nearly 40% lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the single state with more commercial holders – has a rate substantially higher than California. Statistics are clear. This administration is dishonest."
Public Opinion and Campaign Considerations
A recently conducted study found that 72% of Democrats and a significant portion of the electorate said that the governor ought to campaign for president in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, Newsom's favorability has increased to an average of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his negative ratings has fallen from an mean of over 40% to 38.4%.
In previous months, the governor stated while on a trip several key regions that he had "no clue" about his intentions for 2028.
He mentioned his earlier challenges, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the young age of five.
"The notion that a individual who had modest test scores, who still struggles to read scripts, who was typically not at the front – the idea that you would even throw that out is, in and of itself, extraordinary," he stated. "It's anyone's guess? I await who presents themselves in 2028 and who answers the call. And that remains the key point for the American people."
