Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership
Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is exiting the directorate at OpenAI, just days after a collection of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became public.
The economist commented in an announcement that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have contributed, excited about the promise of the organization, and anticipate observing their development".
Summers, who formerly presided over the Ivy League institution, announced on recently that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his connections with the convicted sex offender.
Digital Correspondence
The newly public messages demonstrated that the economist communicated with the financier until the eve of the financier's 2019 detention for suspected human trafficking of minors.
In another announcement, the technology organization expressed it respected the economist's determination to depart.
"We appreciate his many contributions and the perspective he brought to the governing body," the organization remarked.
Legislative Background
This news arrives after the entire Congress of the legislative branch agreed on Tuesday to pass a bill that would require the Department of Justice to release its records on Epstein.
The bill will then proceed to the administration of President Trump for approval. Trump has stated he expects to endorse the legislation, after modifying his view on the subject following pressure from his supporters.
Correspondence Findings
A collection of financier-linked messages released by the legislative panel last week mentioned several prominent individuals in the billionaire's previous network, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those people.
The emails revealed that the professor and the financier regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often seeking to connect the academic to influential global figures.
Individual Statement
After the messages were shared with the general audience, the former official expressed he took "full responsibility for my poor choice to continue interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
He further stated that he wanted "to restore trust and mend bonds with the persons closest to me".
Career Background
The economist served in leadership roles under Democratic administrations; serving as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as head of the National Economic Council under President Obama.
He presided over the institution from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a academic there. When announcing his step-down from public commitments recently on this week, he stated he would persist with his academic responsibilities.
Other Impacts
Following his declaration on earlier this week, the policy organization, a progressive research organization in DC where the professor was a researcher, announced that Summers was no longer affiliated with the institution.
Summers entered the directorate of the technology firm, which develops ChatGPT, in the previous year - following a defeated move to remove its chief executive OpenAI's head.
