Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson disclosed he came dangerously close to a life-threatening incident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when a pair of track officials ran across the track immediately ahead of his car

The alarming incident occurred on the third lap when track officials were observed on the circuit as Lawson was returning to the race following an premature pit stop to change his damaged front wing

Driver's Immediate Reaction

Immediately after, the Formula 1 racer Lawson radioed to his pit wall engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you witness that? I could have... killed them"

"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was seeing"

"I exited on a brand new hard tyres, and then I arrived at Turn One and there were just two dudes dashing across the track"

"I came close to striking one of them, honestly, it was so dangerous"

Track Safety Questioned

"Obviously there's been a failure in communication at some point but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's absolutely inexcusable"

"We can't understand how on a ongoing race track marshals can be authorized to just dash across the track in such a way. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm confident we'll get some sort of explanation, but it really can't happen again"

Governing Body Reviewing

Formula 1's governing body, the global motorsport federation, is thoroughly reviewing the situation

"Subsequent to a first corner event, the race directors was informed that wreckage remained on the track at the apex of that corner" stated the governing body

"In the third rotation, safety personnel were alerted and made ready to enter the track and recover the debris once the entire field had cleared the area"

"The moment it was realized that Lawson had entered the pits, the orders to send marshals were canceled and a double yellow flag was displayed in that zone"

"We are still investigating what transpired following that moment"
