Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their latest talk.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”

It remained unclear when Boyd could be discharged the hospital, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.

“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. And again, that puts my mind at ease, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”

New York police released security footage earlier this week of a suspect in the shooting of Boyd. The reason behind the incident is still being looked into and police mentioned it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday in the area between MSG and Times Square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been in his thoughts “a great deal” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a baby.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he recently became a father,” Glenn noted. “My mind went to his family, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
“There is a procedure involved, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd did not participate this season, his first with the Jets, after his season was cut short due to injury on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that required surgery.

He signed with New York as a free agent in spring and was anticipated to become an important component of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a practice session on August 2 and had to be helped off.

Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.

“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn commented. “In fact, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of UT in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
