No less than 64 civilians were killed in a law enforcement action against the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the biggest and most lethal operation in the area's history.

Four security agents lost their lives during the police action in the Alemão and Penha districts, state officials reported. In excess of 80 individuals were arrested.

Fierce clashes erupted when about 2,500 security personnel moved in on Tuesday morning. The criminal organization reacted using gunfire, burning barricades and using drone-dropped explosives, authorities stated.
