The beloved police drama AC-12 will make a comeback for its 7th installment, announced by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-part series created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the network.

The actress shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together next year."

The previous series concluded in recent years with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only came this week.

Fresh Obstacles for AC-12

Series seven will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.

Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain working to combat corruption within the police force.

The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most delicate case to date."

New Character and Intricate Plot

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to act as a sexual predator.

However, his case might serve as a deliberate distraction from a larger danger still operating in the background, the teaser suggested.

In a statement, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"It's an honor to have had countless fans track the ups and downs of the unit over multiple series and we are thrilled to be coming back for a seventh season."

He added: "Misconduct in the UK was thought to be over while the series was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

Martin Compston called appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".

"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress remarked: "It goes without saying I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll see you soon!"

Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be working together next year."

"Pleased with the news and anticipating those mercurial plot developments."

Show History

The drama premiered in the early 2010s and evolved into a highly successful TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Kelly Macdonald.

The BBC has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will premiere.

The finale of season six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a close, and producers said at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

However, the corporation announced on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
