Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on January 18 in the city of Melbourne.

Historic Comeback to Melbourne Park

The event organizers confirmed on the weekend that the 45-year-old legend will make a return at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she overcame her sibling Serena in the second round before exiting in the quarter-finals to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Summer Swing

The tennis star had previously revealed in November her intention to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was likewise awarded a wild card, two weeks prior to the Melbourne event. Organizers noted that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Australia's Hobart International a following week, immediately prior to the action begins at Melbourne Park.

Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.

"I’m excited to return in the country and eagerly anticipating competing during the summer season," Venus stated. "I’ve had so many incredible memories there, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to go back to a place that has been so significant to my professional journey."

Williams' overall record at the Australian Open stands at an impressive 54 victories and 21 losses. This year will represent the 22nd time she has appeared in the primary tournament field.

Setting a Fresh Benchmark

The tournament pointed out that Williams is set to become the oldest woman to compete in an Australian Open main draw, surpassing the record formerly set by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she lost in the first round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
