The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Track

This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure from Critical Role, revealed a new opening credits. It features our favorite cast of misfits, misfits, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching personal histories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.

Overall, the opening appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that an element was lost in the music selection.

This sequence employs "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar composition composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the soundtrack album of the same name, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great sentimental option, and I suspect that fans of the second campaign will love its inclusion.

Personally, The series' opening fails to capture the hype and energy that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, was an instant classic for me when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when co-founder the performer added lyrics to the tune for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.

Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign at that point, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. This track that excites you before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.

The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of this party, I feel that its mood is somewhat mismatched.

Of course, Critical Role has stated that the series will have a few surprises and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be among these.

The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on the streaming service from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on the audio platform and YouTube.
