The Year 2026 Declared the Year of the Frog Game.

While I found the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was a personal epiphany: I am declaring that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these amphibious creatures. Given that a collection of frogs is known as an army, it appears they are staking their claim.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Frogs are anything but new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a cult following. However, their visibility has markedly surged in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an staggering number of results. Granted, some of these are novelty titles, a sizable number are legitimate titles centered on frogs.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To grasp this trend, I undertook a deep dive into the recent history of hoppy gaming on Steam. My methodology was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The results paint a clear picture: a consistent increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The amphibian's rising status in the public consciousness is also evident elsewhere, like the revival of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. However, the trend in gaming looks uniquely powerful.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

Honestly, this is a trend I can fully endorse. Frogs have inherent design advantages for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a fan favorite in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues lend themselves to a host of unique mechanics.

A number of the showcased games smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the biggest year so far.

If these games are received positively—and historically, games from this showcase often do—we might just be witnessing a true amphibian entertainment revival.
