Youth Discovered Dead After Untrue Allegations of Stealing Ashes
One teenage youth was found dead only a few days following being falsely accused of taking the ashes of a dead infant during a burglary, an inquest has heard.
Tragic Finding
Kai Lloyd's mother and father discovered his remains in his room at his Connah's Quay residence on 19 November 2021.
Untrue Allegations Start
The investigation heard how his mother received a message on November 8th, 2021 via social media, from a individual asking if her son was her offspring. The message stated: "Tell him appreciation for breaking into my apartment."
In a testimony presented to the court, Lisa Lloyd said the individual had been in the news, claiming her infant's remains had been stolen in a break-in - a claim which was false.
Police Inquiry
An official inquiry from police later determined the alleged break-in complainant had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that said items was not taken in the beginning".
Media reports about the supposed stolen ashes attracted social media responses, and although Kai was not named in the posts, his parent said individuals "knew it was him".
The "social media content were really upsetting", she stated.
Emotional Wellbeing Impact
She added that her son had been identified with moderate attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and as part of that condition, other individuals' views genuinely mattered to him.
"This must have hurt him deeply," she said, "particularly when this was not true".
Kai was arrested at home, but nothing was found. He was transported to a law enforcement facility and later released pending further inquiry.
Authorities said they would be in contact, the inquest learned, but had not contacted the family by the moment of his death.
Isolation and Worry
His mother said her son "became isolated" after the detention and "would keep asking me whether I had heard anything from the authorities", because his ADHD meant sometimes "a minute could feel like days".
When she spoke to him about the alleged burglary, she said her child told her he had gone into the house because the resident who lived there had said he could utilize the bathroom whenever he needed, but refuted taking anything.
Online Bullying
In a combined testimony between her and her husband, Mrs Lloyd said her son was being bullied digitally after the accusations.
The inquest heard that a young adult encouraged Kai to end his life.
She had no worries on the evening before he passed away, explaining how she had heard him "laughing and teasing".
She described him as a "caring, loving" boy, and said her "family is totally shattered".
He had been "clearly concealing his worries", she stated, adding that he could not bear to have anyone "have negative thoughts of him".
Educational Response
The inquest received testimony from school staff at the local secondary school.
On 8 November, she "overheard some students talking that Kai had been detained and that was the initial I learned".
"He told me... he'd done nothing wrong," she added.
After the discussion, the educator said she rang Kai's family telephone and left a message saying she had spoken to the student about the allegations.
The court heard his family said they did not receive that communication.
Formal Conclusion
Lead investigator told the hearing he would wait for reports regarding what enhancements had been made to handling individuals with ADHD, before determining whether he should make a prevention of subsequent deaths report.
Providing a narrative finding, he stated: "Around 8 November 2021, unsupported accusations were made against the teenager, a young individual.
"Likely falsehoods were subsequently exaggerated and exaggerated through the platform of social media.
"During November 11th, he was interviewed by the police and after his questioning he was freed whilst inquiries continued."
The coroner concluded: "There is no proof that the actions or omissions of any organization led to or added to his death and although it was the result of a personal action it is impossible to discern his intent."
